MacBook Pro OS X version 10.8.5

Good day, I would like to upgrade my macbook from 2013 to another version of OS X than 10.8.5 since a lot of applications and such don't approve anything less than 10.10. Can I upgrade to 10.10 instead of Sierra because I don't think my mac would handle Sierra.
