Can I edit MSWord documents in iCloud?

I have MicroSoft Word for Mac (v. 15.28) installed on my MacBook Pro (MacOS Sierra v.10.12.1). I do not use Pages so all of my documents are in Word. I also have all my MacBook files backed up in iCloud. I've looked into how to edit Word documents in iCloud but it appears that that cannot be done. I would love to buy an iPad Pro so I can work on my documents at home without taking my MacBook Pro home every night. Can anyone help me find out if there is a way to edit my Word documents using iCloud and an iPad? I've contacted AppleCare and as far as they could tell it is not possible. Could they have been wrong?

The is a Word app for IOS available in the iTunes Store.

To edit MS Office documents, use either a third-party application or consider using Apple's proprietary Pages.

I sometimes use the Word app on an iPad to edit Word documents stored on iCloud Drive. No problem although I find it slightly (very slightly) more convenient to use Microsoft OneDrive instead of iCloud. I have a 3rd generation iPad and have an Office 365 subscription for Office 2016 For Mac.

Also see the quote below from https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-word/id586447913?mt=8

Word is ready for iPad Pro and looks amazing on the 12.9-inch screen. Read Word documents on iPad Pro for free. To create and edit docs, you need a qualifying Office 365 subscription.

I am having the same issue re editing in icloud. I can edit in word but cannot save as when then the save as box comes up there is an X in the title and that X remains for any title I choose. Any ideas? I think it might have something to do with my main email is the one used by icloud account and word is using another icloud email. I had cleared my computer due to another issue so maybe this is why this happened.
