iMac performance is slowing

My iMac performance has been intermittently poor, but in general is steadily decreasing.  I get the spinning beachball when trying to open individual emails, or move from app to app.  Time to open apps like iTunes is longer than on other systems.  Documents in Word are sometimes slow to open, and page scrolls lag.  I don't have a correlation between when the system performs worse than others.  I ran EtreCheck, and got the following results.  Appreciate any suggestions...

EtreCheck version: 3.4.4 (448)

Uninstall McCafee AV. No anti-virus or so-called "cleaning"apps are necessary or recommended for Mac OS. At best they use unnecessary resources and at worst they can bork your whole system. In your case VShieldScanner (part of McCafee is crashing.

You have a number of problems, first is you have MacAffee Antivirus installed which is worthless and is likely the cause of your problem. Mac OS was designed from the very beginning to be completely secure and only requires that it be kept up to date. Mac OS does not require any third party AV, cleaning or ANY third party maintenance utilities. Locate the uninstall process for uninstalling the AV app and uninstall it.

Next is you have worthless WD HD software installed which is also a potential problem. Please do the same and uninstall that.

Third you have a large amount of Internet Plugins installed, my hunch is many are not necessary and you aren't even aware they are installed. Please remove the ones you do not require, instructions are in Safari 8 (Yosemite): If you need to remove a plug-in

Thanks for the quick response.  That's very helpful.
