Safari running WAY slow after Sierra upgrade?

I have a MacBook Pro, 13 inch, early 2011. I have always updated to the latest OS when released.

I installed Sierra today, no problems with the installation. The only problem I've found is Safari is running at a GLACIAL pace. I can't even do a speedtest because it times out (it's not my ISP, speed test on iPhone is good).

Has anyone else seen this problem? Thanks in advance.

Paul J.

You can try empty cache and disable all extentions and add-ons. Restart Safari and go from there.

I agree with leroydouglas, it's most likely a plugin. If removing plugins fails, try testing the guest or a new User. If you don't see slowdowns you know the problem is in your User's folder.

Well that answers that. I logged in as guest, and Safari was flying like it should. So I guess it's time for me to start cleaning! Thanks so much for your help...

You can export your Safari data then start with a clean Safari folder.  File > Export Bookmarks.

Quit Safari.

Rename Safari folder by adding XXXs like this SafariXXX in your User's Library.

Open Safari and it will create a new Safari folder.

Import your Bookmarks.

If you want to revert to the original Safari folder just rename the current folder and remove the XXXs from the original.

Please read If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support.

On 2nd night of tech support we reinstalled Sierra. That solved the slowness issue with everything but Safari.

If you use Twitter you'll see the difference in sending tweets in Safari vs. Firefox.

1610110-1656-I have a nearly identical 2013 Powerbook 13in. Pro, 16GB Ram, 1GB SSD, etc.  Followed all the steps here and on other sites clearing caches, killing apps and plug-ins, tossing files from the root library and the same old thing: Safari so slow that it would crash from sloth before being able to even build the next screen.  Then, I unplugged my ASUS 1080P traveling external USB-powered display and, violá!  It's now super fast.  I suspect that ASUS simply hasn't quite gotten their team to update the MB168B+ drivers yet.

I tested Safari on Sierra on my Macbook 12in. Retina, which is not nearly as fast as my Macbook Pro and it was much faster than my Pro until I disconnected the ASUS and rebooted.  Now Safari on my MBPro is the fastest its ever been on Safari.  Probably a combination of getting rid of the speed hog AND going through all those speed-up steps.

Okay, I'm not a tech guy and I am in Nicaragua (slow internet speeds). This is what I did, if you don't have App Cleaner... get it.

Open App Cleaner and scroll down to Safari and click to remove it. Make sure all the little boxes are checked. Then go back and click on Safari again and click to remove it. Make sure the little boxes are checked and this time you will have to enter your password. App Cleaner will not let you completely remove safari which is a good thing. Close App Cleaner and empty the trash. Then open Safari and presto chango you have a clean and fresh copy of Safari to work with. For me this is so much easier than trying to find all the files in finder, like I said I'm not a tech guy. You will have to go through and delete favorites you don't use and add extensions you do use, that sort of thing, but this worked for me.

Okay, I am not a tech guy and I'm in Nicaragua (slow internet). First thing if you don't have App Cleaner get it and then open it and scroll down to Safari, click on it and another window opens, make sure you check all the little boxes, then click delete. Then go back and click on Safari again and another window opens with more boxes to check, check them and click delete. This time you will be asked for your password, enter it. After that you will still see Safari listed on App Cleaner, it's okay, App Cleaner won't completely erase Safari. Close App Cleaner, empty the trash and click on the Safari icon and presto chango you have a brand new copy of Safari. Like I said, I'm not a tech guy and finding an Apple genius bar down here isn't going to happen any more than me going through finder and making sense of all the greek language listed there. You will have to reconfigure Safari to your liking, favorites, search engine that sort of thing, but this works and it's easy.

My mid 2011 iMac is also running Safari and Chrome at super slow speed. If I start in safe-mode they return to normal. I have unplugged my usb cords except for the keyboard.

I am still looking for an answer to this as well. The main difference between ours is that it occurs both in Chrome and Safari simultaneously.

I've tried many of the suggested fixes and found no solution. Even went so far as replacing the modem/router thinking it had to be a hardware issue. We have the same setup, 2011 - 13" so I hope someone has found something.

In my case, I am able to open the lid, connect to the network and even at times get a Google return from Safari if I am fast enough. However, any of the links retuned from Google will not load and generally return a network error. I am able to connect to the router/modem the entire time and have a constant connection to an iMac (hardwired) as well as an ATV4 (wireless) which never seem to have issues with internet connectivity.
