2017 MacBook Pro Backlit Keyboard

What is expected behavior for the backlit keyboard after having set it to automatically adjust in the keyboard settings menu?

For instance, when I am in a fully lit room during the day, I notice that the backlight is still on. I would expect this to turn off in such an environment.

Moreover, when I take my thumb and completely cover up the ambient light sensor next to the camera, the backlight does not change in brightness level. I would have expected it to increase because I was fooling it to think it was in a dark room.

Any help would be appreciated.
