Crashed MacBook Pro has apparently corrupted so...

Hello

My Apple MacBook Pro 13" Intel Core i7 8GB RAM with Internal 500GB HDD & 128GB SSD recently crashed and refused to start up again. I tried the various recovery items that I could find online, ran disk utility in recovery mode etc, checked hardware  and it said all was fine but it would still not start up and get stuck on the grey screen.

Having got someone to look at it, they have said there are a number of problems

1. The OS software is corrupt, and that to reinstall means losing all my applications.

2. The data on the 500GB HD appears to be intact.

The system is split so that the data is on the 500GB HD and the applications are on the 128GB SSD that was installed in place of the CD/DVD drive.

They are suggesting this is not a good configuration and won't work with Time Machine (I did have an external back up, but they are saying it won't load because of the split drives which seems to be confusing the Time Machine back up.

I am, of course most concerned to ensure my data remains intact. It seems a new OS can be installed but I will lose all my applications from the SSD in that process and have to re-install them all - not possible now given I am travelling.

It also seems that emails that are archived in mail are very hard to get back.

Has anyone any suggestions? This is all quite confusing, but the split HD /SSD was installed by another technician for speed and efficiency some 3 years ago, and now I have been told this is a problem. Suggestions as to how to move forward?

Hi,

I would try to reinstall macOS: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904 It should not erase anything, just install a new OS over the old one.

`it seems they are saying now that the SSD drive which held all the applications is 'messed up.' So that's new although apparently possibly to reinstall OS. My question is also, is it a problem for Time Machine to recognise 2 drives - the SSD (installed instead of CD/DVD) and the HD? Should there only be one drive?
