iMac slow and glitchy after sierra upgrade: mor...

I have a mid-2011 iMac and recently upgraded to Sierra from Lion. It stalls and is slow at log in, or after the screen goes to sleep to log in, and is generally slow and just off. It usually takes 2 to 3 clicks to make things work in Finder or in Firefox or Spotify, trying to type and select type, clicking and moving my cursor and selecting files and folders in Finder, and my Adobe programs are glitchy af. I tried a trial version of the latest Adobe CC versions of Illustrator, Photoshop and Indd and they were also glitchy--I wasn't sure if I just needed to have the most recent versions of Adobe to play nice with the current OS, but since they are both weird, I'm not sure what the solve is.

Is maxing out my RAM worth a try (currently at 4GB, with two empty slots)? Or is the glitchiness more likely the OS? If I downgrade to El Capitan might that solve the slowness and glitchiness? I don't want to risk issues with my phone though, I noticed it would have issues backing up when my iMac was still on Lion. Maybe El Capitan will still play nice with my iphone 5c ?

Thank you!
