I get an error "Mac Sierra cannot be installed ...

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) system that has MacOS Sierra 10.12.6 installed. I upgraded yesterday from 10.9.2 without issues. I am having trouble connecting a Thunderbolt Gigabit Ethernet Adapter to this system (says it is not connected - ethernet cables work fine on other systems, tried two different working LAN taps), and a co-worker suggested I try this upgrade, but I cannot install it. The system has 16GB memory, and 484GB free disk space.

The system info for the Thunderbolt Bus (first Port) says Device Connected, (second Port) says No device connected, and underneath the second Port report it shows Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, with a Port (upstream) status of Device connected.

What does this have to do with your topic's title? It is also posted in the wrong forum, I think.
