Can I connect a firewire disk to a Thunderbolt ...

I have an old (2009) iMac with a firewire port connected to a disk and and a DVD RW drive. I am converting to the latest iMac with a Thunderbolt 3 port.  The people at the Apple store say there is no Firewire 800 -> Thunderbolt 3 adaptor and that I need to chain Firewire 800-> Thunderbolt 2 ->  Thunderbolt 3 adaptors. However, they do not seem to know if this actually works and whether I will then be able to boot systems off the disk.  I use it to boot older OSs when there are problems with the latest one.

Has anyone tried this and know whether it works?

It would seem there are mixed results chaining TB3 to TB2 to anything. So, you can try it but if it doesn't work then you shouldn't be surprised. My advice is to put the bare drive into a USB 3.1-C box, if possible. Or get a SATA to USB-C cable.
