Touch ID not working when MBP is awakened

Following the upgrade to High Sierra, our MBP's Touch ID does not work after awakening the machine from sleep.

Have deleted the old fingerprint, added new one, reset the SMC. All works fine until the unit sleeps for an extended period and is then awakened.

Can you suggest a fix?
