How to turn on auto lock

I have a new iPad Pro and when it is inactive the screen lock feature to enter a password never turns on.  The settings are set for auto lock after 2 minutes.  When it sits for any period of time, you only have to hit the home button to re-activate Active use.  I would like to turn on the feature that forces me to enter a password to continue to use the system. This works ok on my old iPad 2

Do you have Touch ID turned on for your fingerprint? See Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Use Touch ID for iPhone Unlock.

If so, when it is locked and you hit the home button, the fingerprint is used to unlock.

Thanks for the prompt response.  I have not turned this on because my wife also uses the system.  Can we both use touch?

If you have not enabled a passcode then that is precisely why none is required to unlock the screen. To use fingerprints you must first set a passcode.  You can then register up to five fingerprints, from different people if you want.

Also, in those settings, make sure that the setting to lock is set at “immediately” (upon screen blanking or pressing the power button to lock).

You can enter multiple fingerprints (they can be hers and yours) or you can do like I do when I need access to my wife's phone -- use the lock screen code instead of the fingerprint.
