AppleCare not associated with Apple watch purch...

Purchased from Nike an Apple Watch for my son.  Have receipt showing AppleCare.  Apple has no record of AppleCare on the device and Nike's receipt does NOT list a serial number.  Nike acknowledges the purchase but has nothing in their sales system with the watch serial number.  Apple Store refuses to honor warranty without an invoice or proper registration.  How do I proceed to obtain warranty repair?
