How to get rid of Advanced Mac Cleaner Lingerin...

Hello,

I recently attempted to download an Adobe Acrobat update to my MacBook Air. I realized after the fact that I accidentally downloaded and gave system access to the Advanced Mac Cleaner (AMC) malware [lesson learned!]. Immediately after I went to these discussions and followed the suggestions on getting rid of the AMC malware - went into my applications and deleted the download, the application, and manually searched for any abbreviations of the AMC from the Applications folder (and emptying the trash folder right away). However, my Safari browser keeps opening tabs to a fake Apple support site and pop-ups keep appearing. I checked Safari preferences and extensions and could not identify any foreign or new extensions. I finally resorted to always blocking pop-ups but am unable to go about accessing sites that may require pop-ups be enabled (ex: signing into Amazon.com). I also downloaded google chrome and the same problem occurs. Pop-ups and redirects or new tabs being open w/ the fake apple support site.

Any suggestions?

Will resetting the laptop get rid of the problem?

Note: I ran scans with MacAfee for Mac and my computer appears clean.

It sounds like you could have adware installed. Download or install of "clean up" software could include some adware that needs to be cleaned up. I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what adware is installed. Download EtreCheck from https://www.etrecheck.com, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID. When you are done, EtreCheck can be thrown in the trash.

If adware is installed, EtreCheck will help you remove it, although you may have to supply a password. If you aren’t comfortable with that, just post the EtreCheck report here and other helpers can tell you exactly what files need to be deleted and how to do so.
