duplicate contacts persist

The contacts on one of my computers (MacBook Pro, iOS 10.12.6) were all in triplicate recently. The problem is not present on my iMac, iPhone, iPad, or iCloud account; just on the MacBook. I followed steps to merge duplicates on the MacBook, and was able to reduce triplicate contacts to duplicate contacts. I have tried running steps to merge duplicates again, but am told that there are no duplicates to merge.

What might I be missing?

I recently had this problem.

I solved it by first unchecking Contacts in iCloud (->System Preferences),

Then I checked iCloud.com Contacts and saw that there were no duplicates in iCloud.com and verified that the contacts were complete and correct.

I then deleted the Contacts on my Mac (⌘A, ⌫), and then re-enabled Contacts in ->System Preferences->iCloud
