I did not change my shipping or billing address

I got this message in an email:

"The following information for your Apple ID XXXXXXXX was updated on 01/28/2013:

Shipping and/or billing address"

I did not trust the email, thinking it might be a case of phishing, so I went to the Apple website to go to my iTunes account and change the password.

After I changed the password I went to the account management area to check my addresses. They were fine.

So now I needlessly changed my password.

It came from this email address: appleid@id.apple.com

Is that a legit Apple address?

Wait, that's not even my "real" Apple ID. It's one that was inadvertenly set up when I got a new iPhone thru ATT.

Now I have to check that one out.

OK, I checked it out. Nothing had changed there, either.

I also received an email last night from appleid@id.apple.com saying that my billing info was changed, but I hadn't changed anything. So I immediately changed my password, and I spoke with an Apple rep this morning for a while trying to figure out what happened. We ultimately figured out that it could be that because the credit card that I had on file had recently expired, it automatically changed things in the system and sent me an email. That's the only thing we could think of, because I have two-factor authentication set up, and I didn't get any notifications that there was an attempt to log in.

They did have me check to be sure that the email hadn't come from a phishing site, and it hadn't, but I was stupid and clicked on the link in that email last night. Thankfully, it was a legitimate email with a link to the actual Apple ID site, but that could have ended very wrong. I won't be making that mistake again. The best advice that I can offer to anyone else is change your password immediately by typing in the Apple ID website address yourself (not following any links), and set up two-factor authentication if you hadn't already.
