Why wont Apple let me turn in a stolen iPod?

I think its crazy that Apple wont let me turn in a stolen iPod. I made a huge mistake by buying a used iPod, and now I realize that its most likely stolen.

I contacted Apple so I could verify if it is stolen or not, but they cant even verify that. I gave them the serial number so they should be able to contact the owner. They just told me to contact the police.

If my iPod was ever stolen and somebody was trying to turn it in to Apple, I would really hope that Apple would notify me or do something about it.

If you found a wallet with money in it and no ID would you take it back the wallet manufacture?

Take the device to the police if you want to turn it in, that is the extent of what you need to do.

How does a wallet with no ID compare to an ipod with a serial number linked to the owner? And I have actually turned in money that I found on the floor at the store even though there was no wallet or ID with it.

I also did contact the police about the ipod and they said it has not been reported stolen so they cant do anything.

Apple are not in the law enforcement (property recovery) business.

Then you are in possession of a brick.

Apple does not take back devices you found, it would be a liability for them to do so, nor do they assist in you trying to track down a serial number linked (or possibly) not to an owner.

What does this have to do with law enforcement? Even stores have "lost and founds" im just trying to turn in a lost item, thats just the way I see it.

Yea probably because they want the rightful owner of the ipod to buy a new one.

Have it your way.
