Adding/Removing Shortcuts to Finder Sidebar Slow

Whenever I try to add or remove a shortcut to the Finder sidebar (e.g. the favorites list) in OS 10.12.5, the Finder stutters for about 3-4 seconds, including showing the Spinning Beachball of Despair. This used to be an instantaneous process — it's now a painful one.

Activity Monitor shows Finder CPU usage spiking to 100% everytime I try this action, so something is wrong somewhere.

Any thoughts/ideas on what might be causing the problem?
