Backing up iOS device to external drive

I have an iPhone 6S+, iOS is the latest update, MacBook Pro (macOS Sierra 10.12.6), and an Apple Time Machine.  As space is limited on the MacBook, it gets eaten up very quickly with backups of my devices, my wife's iPhone, and the kids' phones.  Up until Yosemite, I was able to backup our devices directly to the Apple Time Machine/Time Capsule by placing a symbolic link in the library/application support/mobilesync/backup folder pointing to the directory on the Time Machine where I wanted the backups to go. This worked great, I could backup to this directory and when I would open iTunes, the backups would show just like they were on the MacBook hard drives.

However, when I upgraded to Yosemite, I have no longer been able to use the symbolic link.  Now I have to backup to the hard drive, copy to the external, delete off the hard drive.  If I have to restore from the backup, then I need to copy all of the backup files and past them to the MacBook. Then perform the backup and delete the files from the MacBook. This takes hours.

I follow these steps to create a symbolic link to where I want the backups to go:

ln -s /Volumes/FileStorage/iTunesExternalBackupSymLink/Backup/ ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync

(substituting the names of my directories for what's in the above.)

After closing out of Terminal, as symbolic link is created in the original library/application support/mobilesync directory to the folder on the Time Capsule.  However, when I run backup now, I will get the following error message...

iTunes could not back up the iPhone because an error occurred while reading from or writing to the iPhone.

So does anyone know of a way to backup directly to the Apple Time Capsule or another external hard drive?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
