UPDATES NOT AVAILABLE

I am trying to download an app to my MAC tabletop, it says I need OSX 10.12 or higher,  I have 10.8.5  but when I check for updates it says I have NONE available…  now what?

Please answer in layman terms…  Im not proficient with computers, and especially my MAC

System upgrades are not updates, but upgrades.

Based on your profile, you should be able to upgrade to Sierra.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.

macOS Sierra is an upgrade not an update, you will find macOS Sierra if you go to the Featured page in the App Store and listed on the right hand side in text or on the left as a graphic. As it is a major upgrade to your system you need to be prepared, check that third party apps you use have available updates for macOS Sierra, you can check via Roaring Apps, https://roaringapps.com/. You will also need to find out if any printer/ scanners or any other hardware you use with your mac have available drivers/ software for macOS Sierra, check with the manufactures.

iPhoto and Aperture (if you bought that) are no longer supported by Apple so you will not be able to use them (there are ways to get them back), they have been replaced by the Photos.app which comes with the OS.

If you are going to upgrade make sure you have a full back up of your system just in case things go wrong or you don't like Sierra.

If you don't want to upgrade to Sierra but still want to use the app you are interested in it may be worth trying the developers website to see if older versions of the software are available.
