Managing iCloud preferences

For the past few days, I was getting a pop-up window, telling me that my Mac couldn't communicate with my iCloud account. It asked me to go into iCloud system preferences. When I did that, I somehow lost all the icons on my desktop. I still have the dock, but nothing else.

What could I have done?
