How to slow down Yosemite Screen Saver

Hi Guys,

Probably a silly question, but does anyone know a simple way to slow down the rate at which Screen Saver changes pictures?

Chris

To do it, open System Preferences -> Desktop & Screen Saver -> Screen Saver -> Screen Saver Options, so you can change the speed. Not all screen savers allow you to change that

Thanks mende1 for your quick reply.

This probably just shows that I am really slow on the uptake but my Screen Saver does not display an Options button and despite searching I can't seem to make it appear. See attached screenshot. The System Preferences is V14.0. Any ideas on how I might try to make the button appear?Screen Shot 2014-10-28 at 9.19.17 pm.png

Further to the above I spoke to Apple support. It seems that the 'Screen Saver Options' button is only available for a few of the displays, e.g., Flurry, but not for others , e.g., National Geographic. Very irritating if one wants to slow down a display of photos.

It looks like the only option is to edit the relevant .plist file owned by root! Ouch.

Most un Apple like.

I am seriously grumpy that I cannot solve this problem. I have followed several Google threads that suggest methods that would scare the pants off me to attempt. What is wrong at Apple that they do not realise that this is a big problem for for so many of their customers but do not supply an easy solution? I think it highly likely that this would be a 5 minute problem for a software person to provide but  I remain gob smacked that Apple refuses to put a 'time between transitions' button or option button to let their customers do so simple a request.

I had a folder of fifty images. I selected all the files in the folder and then duplicated them. Then I selected "Classic" for the display option. That doubled the time each image was displayed (though in reality it was showing the file twice). That will only work if a transition is chosen without any special effects. Classic is ideal. If you want a photo displayed three times as long, batch duplicate the files again. In order of appearance, you will have file#1, file#1 copy, file#1 copy copy, etc. NOTE: Do not select the "shuffle slide order" option, for you need the files to appear one after another. The transition from one slide to its duplicate is not visually detectable. It looks like simply a longer display of the one photo.

The whole process can be done in half a minute if you batch duplicate files.

Try this link. It works.

OS X Mavericks screensaver changes pictures too quickly: How do I ...

Thanks a lot, it works!

Well done simonchoe but you are a braver man than I am. I wouldn't dream of editing the system software in that depth for fear of doing accidental damage.

What I am looking for is for Apple to put a simple button on the screensaver set-up that allows users to select their desired transition time. I find it totally amazing that they haven't done this. One of my greatest joys in owing a 27" iMac is seeing it slideshow all my photos in random order. I just want the images to stay on the screen for longer than they do. I think that that is a basic personal preference that Apple should provide and I find it very disappointing that they haven't.

I have also have problems with Apple's Photos application. I cannot get it to drive my printer. If I try to print a photo all that happens is the printer outputs a sheet of paper with nothing printed on it. In addition if I use the Photos library in Screensaver it shows a blank screen instead of one of my photos intermittently during the show. I am just grateful that I still have the original iPhoto application on my iMac because it suffers from neither of these problems. I just need to find a way of moving some photos from my Photos library to my iPhoto library and I will be happy to move Apple's 'Photos' into the trash that it appears to me to be.

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.

OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system  also Yosemite

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Feedback

Thank you for your advice Eric but I am reluctant to delete the printer which works fine with all the other applications on my iMac and all the other computers on my network. I have to say that I think it safer to just forget about "Photos" and to use "iPhoto" when I want to print one of my images.

I am grateful for your link to Feedback to Apple and I have used this to report this and also my Screen Saver issue to them. As you say, if enough people complain they may do something about it because I think they like to operate as a customer-friendly company.

By the way, I am running El Capitan but didn't find it available on the drop down list when I first made contact on the support group.

Cheers

This simply does not work. Yosemite here w/ Sliding Panel screen saver.

PlistBuddy tells me I have a delay of 20 for mainDuration.

Do I need to reboot?

You can reduce  the timings by selecting the box start after ... .. fill up the desired time,  and also  select the box show with clock .

Yeah I have those set already. Start after 10 minutes, show the clock. No dice; pictures still zoom through at 3 seconds, even though the plist file shows 20.

This is with the Sliding Panels photo motif. Might that be any different?

Make sure that the Photos library you're using is designated the System Photos Library in Photos' General preference pane:
