Time Machine Conundrum

Well, it is a conundrum for me at least. I have a Pegasus R6 with 12 TB of storage. I've run out of storage for a while now. I have bought some extra external drives and mirror those using SuperDuper to the ones I can no longer fit onto the Pegasus. So I have ended up with this patched together back up system. Seems to work ok.

I am noticing as I continue to add more video and photos, things are getting harder for my TM to backup. I'm starting to get more messages about TM being full and what it can do about it. I suppose I am reaching a decision point.

I just found out the potential exists to upgrade the Pegasus R6 from 2TB each drives to 4TB each drives, so that I could double my TM capacity to 24 TB. That sounds reasonable. I looked for the drives to match the compatibility list; I can find the exact drives with the exception that the firmware version listed isn't matching the compatibility list.

Question #1: Do you think the firmware version not matching exactly is a deal breaker? Anyone upgraded their R6 and had success or failure with it?

which leads to my next question. I just found out tonight (ok, I'm a little behind) that TM can handle multiple external drives. I guess the last time I looked such a question up a few years ago, TM would only manage one drive at a time and so I had this (old) notion that that was not an option. Now that I know it is an option...

Question #2: is it just as simple as adding a second drive to my existing system, and then TM will just figure it all out, including the maxed out Pegasus? Or would I need to wipe out the Pegasus when I put the new TM on so they can balance each other out? Anyone added 2 or more external drives? Any caveats to the process I should know about?

I confess I know nothing about how TM manages files. I have done some reading about how it alternates between drives, but it didn't clarify my limited understanding of TM file management.

What would you recommend? Doubling the capacity of the Pegasus or adding a second and possibly third external drive designated as TM?
