Watch 1 not charging after WatchOS 4 upgrade

Immediately after upgrading to WatchOS 4, my Apple Watch (1st gen) doesn't want to charge. Or it sort of doesn't want to charge, it's hard to tell.

Note that absolutely nothing has changed, hardware wise; I'm using the same Apple Watch, the same wireless charger (that came with the Apple Watch), plugged into the same USB port that I've been using for over two years now.

After the upgrade, when I place the watch on the charger, I no longer get the chime or the watch face showing that big charging symbol and charge ring. What happens now is that, sometimes, the tiny lock icon at the top of the watch face momentarily changes to the red lightening bolt, then the green lightening bolt, then back to the lock symbol.

Sometimes it charges, albeit slowly. I confirm this by checking its charge percentage occasionally. Other times it doesn't seem to be charging at all. This morning I woke up and the watch had only charged to 51% and had a warning that "this charging accessory is not supported."

I've restarted the watch several times and I've gone through the "Watch won't charge" troubleshooting steps on Apple's website: no difference.

Any suggestions, or it is time to call Apple support?
