why are photos disappearing from icloud when i ...

HI. I have an iPhone 6. I don't really understand the cloud but I have sat and backed up my photos today, or at least I thought I had. when I have then deleted a photo off my iPhone it has also disappeared from my cloud???

I'm so confused as also none of my previous 100's of photos are there despite my phone having been set to backup automatically.

please help as I don't want to lose my phots but I'm running out of memory and I thought that was the point of the cloud. (I have paid to increase my icloud size too)

I assume you are using iCloud Photo Library.  The way Apple has set it up, iCloud is not simply offline storage, it is a syncing mechanism.  When you delete a photo or video from your Photos app, it will also delete from your iCloud Photo Library and iCloud storage and everywhere else, including the device itself. You can recover your photos and videos from the Recently Deleted album for 30 days (after 30 days, they are gone for good):

Also, once you use iCloud Photo Library, iCloud backups no longer include your photos since they are already in iCloud.

If you are not using iCloud Photo Library, then your iCloud backups should include your photos.  However if you delete them on your device, then they will also be deleted in the next iCloud backup.  Again, that is the way Apple designed it.  If you simply want off-line storage then look for a third party app, like google drive.
