AirPods random audio drop on MacBook

So I have a pair of AirPods, model A1523, FW 3.7.2.

When I connect them to my MacBook Air running 10.12.6 the following can happen:

- while on Skype, in a call, the AirPods will stop playing randomly

- while watching YouTube content on Safari, same as above

Manually doing a disconnect/reconnect from the Bluetooth tray menu will fix the issue.

I've never had it happen on the iPhone, although it does experience the occasional random drop/fade, it will recover on its own.

Is this a known issue, and is a fix or workaraound available?
