When is Apple going to fix the "Skip When Shuff...

This feature was broken several updates ago.  Apple seems to know about the issue, but still hasn't fixed it.  Songs that are marked "Skip when shuffling" in their options are still coming on during a general shuffle of songs.  This used to work wonderfully until they "updated" iTunes.  Why have a feature listed that doesn't even work?  I would really like for Apple to fix this problem in the next update.

I can't realistically test this on my main library, but with a test library that is just shy of 3,000 tracks I set them all to skip when shuffling. If I start one song playing and enable the shuffle icon that is the only song that plays. Right-clicking on Music and then clicking Shuffle does nothing until I reset some songs and clear the skip when shuffling flag. They are then the only songs that play. That suggests it might be an issue with your library (and others who are affected) rather than a fault that affects everyone.

For Apple to start working on the problem they first have to know it exists. You can report the issue via the relevant feedback form, e.g. iTunes Feedback, and/or make use of Apple Bug Reporting. I haven't noticed it myself but I rarely shuffle play my library.

As I stated in my original post, Apple is aware of the issue.  Any Google search of it confirms many discussions about this and the fact that it has been reported and never fixed.  But thanks for the links to Feedback and Bug Reporting.  I looked and looked and could not find these to save my life!  Maybe if enough people keep reporting the problem, they might be motivated to fix it someday.  Or, if they don't plan to fix it, they should remove that check box from the Options (but I hope they fix it).

Perhaps you could enlighten me as to the description of this bug. If I set an entire album, for example, to skip when shuffling, then start a track playing, when it finishes iTunes stops. If I have some tracks set to skip, and some not, then shuffle play will skip the selected tracks, play the rest in a random order, and then stop. What am I missing?

If you choose to play your entire library on Shuffle (like I have always loved to do), it is supposed to skip any song(s) that have the option "skip when shuffling" checked.  For instance, I have holiday music set to skip (among other things). This worked successfully for many years. Then, after a particular update some time ago, this stopped working.  Christmas songs creep in!  It doesn't matter if I'm on my computer, phone, or iPad.  The skip feature is not working.  There have been many subsequent updates to iTunes, but this problem remains.  I have tried all kinds of things, but nothing seems to make this work.  Many Google searches have simply confirmed that others are having the same problem.  I would love to get my music back to playing the way I like it.  I prefer *not* to use playlists most of the time.  I have a very eclectic library and I like it all on shuffle.

I hope that explanation is clearer.

Well, that's interesting.  I think I've done this before, but I can go in and uncheck everything, then recheck and see if it makes a difference.  Everything seems to shuffle just fine.  It just never skips anything.  I'll go back again and try the deselect and re-select thing.  Who knows?  Sometimes the 12th time is a charm.

Failing that why not make a playlist of the stuff that you want to skip and a smart playlist that is everything in music apart from the stuff in the skip list? You could also uncheck the suff you don't want playing by accident should you choose.

Sure, I could do that, but why should I?  Then I would have to add any new music I buy to this "playlist" every time I make a purchase.  They should make this feature either work, or remove it entirely.  The feature used to work and now it does not.  I'd like them to fix it!  I did my part.  I checked the box I was supposed to.  Now they need to make that actually do what it says it will.  It seems like a small thing, but from a product design standpoint, it is actually very important.

I'm not disagreeing with you, the features should work as they are described, and they should do so for everyone. However as long as they don't work properly for some then perhaps you or others may have use of a workaround. Using a smart playlist the way I have described would automatically include new media. The only time you might need to take additional action would be if you buy or import something new that you also want to exclude from shuffling. As part of the process you would also be generating a list of all items that you choose to skip so that in future if it turns out that turning the flag off and on again is supposed to fix it then at least you'll have a ready list of which tracks you need to reset.

I am under the impression that this issue relates to the iOS music player, not necessarily iTunes.  But, perhaps it is in iTunes as well if you are shuffling your music on your PC.  In my case, I have a lot of comedy CD's that I ripped into iTunes, marked to skip when shuffling and put onto my iPod Touch.  With the old music player, none of those items would play when shuffling.  Simple as that.  Ever since the music player got an overhaul with iOS 9, this function no longer works.  It's still an available option when editing songs in iTunes, but the new music player clearly wasn't designed to look at that checkbox.  I really wish they'd fix it.  The fact that it has been reported many times since the bug was uncovered shows that Apple isn't concerned with fixing it.

I also have this problem after buying two ipod touch units to replace my old classic that died. I have a large holiday playlist that I do not wish to hear when shuffling. I have made it into a playlist and even rechecked all the selections and nothing has worked. ITunes still has the option to "skip when shuffling" but it is very frustrating to deal with it not working. Shuffling is my preferred method of listening to everything in my huge collection. My only option seems to be to delete the whole holiday genre until December. Shouldn't have to do that since it worked perfectly in the past.

I agree that the "skip when shuffling" needs to transfer to the iPhone app.  Until then, I've gotten around it by creating a smart playlist that "does not include" music with a rating of 1 star.  I defaulted all of my library to 3 stars and changed the tracks I wanted skipped to 1.  New unrated music should show up as well.  No disrespect to those tracks but I don't need to hear holiday music or backing tracks that I use during my orchestra class on shuffle.

Edit: The iTunes Music app does not recognize star ratings so I'm stuck with the same problem.  Back to the drawing board.

This is absolutely infuriating.

I just can't get my head around how such an important feature is still broken after all this time.

I have spoken word, comedy, and hundreds of Christmas songs, and because I share so much of my music with other family members there is a huge body of songs I just don't want to hear. My wife's Broadway showtunes. My daughter's country. All of the spoken word and comedy albums I've collected over all the years.

When my music is on shuffle, all I want to hear is the music I want to hear. That is the entire point of shuffle.

It's an incredibly broken user experience when I can't simply relax and listen to my desired library in the car on a sunny day in July without Trans Siberian Orchestra Christmas tunes popping up in succession, or my wife's Michael Buble bubbling out of my speakers.

No amount of fiddling, removing, checking, unchecking, etc., etc., will stop these songs from popping up in my shuffle.

The only "solution" is to completely delete them from your library and your devices. Which means when Christmas time comes and I want the occasional Christmas tune to pop up in my list, I have to redownload/upload ALL off it. I never used to have to contort myself to listen to my library the way I wanted to. Why do I have to now?

This was once so straightforward, and is now completely broken.

It's been this way for quite a while, and I simply cannot tell you how unbelievably disappointed I am that Apple has allowed the simple, wonderful application that actually transformed the way that the world listened to music to be this fundamentally broken.
