MacBook Pro beachballed with extremely dimmed s...

This morning, when I woke up my MacBook Pro late 2016 model with touch bar by lifting up the lid, it looked quite normal. However, as soon as I unlocked it with my touch ID, the screen went extremely dark and the touch bar only displayed an "Esc" and some volume control buttons. From the dark screen, I could only make out that the cursor was a beachball. Pressing the "Esc" key or brightness increase button on a connected bluetooth keyboard had no use. I left it until the screen went to sleep again, then I pressed any key to wake it up. The screen was brightened up on the login screen but immediately went into the extremely dim mode. With the extremely dark screen, I couldn't open "Activity Monitor" to force quit the offending application that had eaten up all the memory, and the only way was to force shutdown the Mac. This has happened to me twice at least. I wonder if there is a setting that I can change so that the screen won't be dimmed when it's beachballed?
