how to connect the ethernet cable to the MacBoo...

When I connect the Ethernet cable, via the adapter, to my MacBook Pro 2015 Retina, the network windows shows that the cable is not connected.

Hi,

Get an Apple Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter (https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD463LL/A/thunderbolt-to-gigabit-ethernet-adap ter), connect one side of an Ethernet cable to a working router or modem and the other side to the Ethernet adapter on the MBP. It should work.

I did all of that. The Mac thinks that the cable is not connected. It doesn't show up on "system preferences". Anything else? At home it's connected thru a docking station so it is hardwired but at the office I have to use the WiFi because it doesn't see the ethernet connection. At home if I bypass the docking station and connect the ethernet directly to the MacBook it also doesn't see it. This is crazy.

What adapter are you using?

Some Third-party adapters require the use of a Utility to discover that there is a new Interface available.

Occasionally a new Interface may require you to ADD it to the list in System Preferences > Network by using the [+] button below the list of devices.

I got the adopter from Apple...my understanding is that it automatically should show the ethernet connection and it doesn't.
