iMac Resets After Restarts

After a restart, my Mac forgets the registration of many (but not all) third-party apps and even gives me the “this is the first time you’ve opened this” message on some common things like Preview.

Twice since June, a restart also spontaneously relaunched the latest Sierra installation routine that I could not circumvent, which reset all my system preferences to default as well. (By spontaneously, I mean I didn’t delete, alter, update, or install anything myself or via the app store prior to it happening.)

I upgraded to Sierra in June on my previously problem-free late-2009 iMac, and I’ve had nothing but problems ever since.

I’m hoping someone has a simple fix for this. I’ve reset the PRAM and used Disk Utility to no avail. It's tiresome to re-register software each time I want to use it.

I’m also hoping it’s related to the other ongoing problem of Preview and TextEdit frequently refusing to open documents on any media other than the built-in hard drive. (But I doubt it because my new 2017 MacBook Pro has the same problem.) The fixes I've seen here for that (including preference trashing and Preview Reset) have no effect. I've been resigned to hoping the next OS update will fix this issue.
