Mac OS Sierra Issue with sbcglobal.net pop account

Hello.  I upgraded my iMac a few months ago from Yosemite to Sierra.  I have Apple Mail configured on this iMac with a pop account for sbcglobal.net.  My preferences are to "Remove copy from server after retrieving from server after 1 week".  I also have a MacBook Pro where I usually read my email initially; it is configured to not remove email from the email server at all, because I want my mail to also download to the iMac.

I don't check the iMac for mail as often, but what I have been noticing recently is that messages are NOT being removed from the server after download to the iMac.  The result of this is that I have messages on my mail server since late May, and every time I launch Mail on the iMac, it runs through thousands of email messages again.  It's not creating duplicate emails, but it is marking the ones previously read as unread again.

I tried from within the Mail account to "remove messages now"  yesterday after they had all processed through again from late May to present, but it didn't work.

I've had my mail configured this way for this workflow, to read messages first on the laptop and then delete from the mail server based on when they are downloaded to the desktop, for years and multiple Mac OS X versions, and it has always worked.  So I suspect the problem is with Sierra, versus sbcglobal.net.

Has anyone else had a problem like this?

Thanks in advance.
