HELP! I can’t get out of Macbook software...

I tried to update my Macbook pro, mid 2009, and restarted my computer. Upon restarting and installation of new software, the computer says it’s missing the files and cannot update. (I AM connected to the internet). Now, everytime I restart my computer, I am back to the software update which does not work. I’m guessing it’s incompatible with my old macboom. I’ve done the restart thing with the command+R+option to get to the start up disk. When I want to quit the software update, it asks to choose and startup disk. Here, NOTHING is showing up! Help!!
