problem with dvd

my mac won't accept my dvd's.  i put in a movie and it spits it right back out and these are dvd's i've watched on the mac before

If you are having trouble with the optical drive in your iMac, take a look at the troubleshooting steps in the resource below.  If the issue persists after cleaning the drive and trying different retail CD or DVD discs, try using an external CD/DVD drive.  The Apple SuperDrive is not designed to work with iMac models prior to 2012.  Contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider near you for service if needed.
