my imac sierra cordless mouse won't point

my cordless mouse is charged, but it won't point. I have reverted back to an old cordless battery mouse from

my old computer. If I did not have this mouse I do not know how to get around the launch pad or even to close

down computer. I looked up answer from the internet, but none of the answers worked. Can some-one please help.
