Lost photos

i recently purchased an additional iPhone 7 for my son and when setting it up signed into my existing Apple ID. This resulted in my photos being downloaded onto the new phone which we proceeded to delete. Unfortunately they now appear to have been lost completely even from my iCloud back up. Can anyone suggest why they aren’t in my recently deleted area or advise if they can be retrieved in any other way please.
