printing is sluggish or unresponsive

hi all,

i have a couple of HP printers i have been using for years and recently they are seen by my mac pro - and the items get into the printer queue - but they don't print. i seem to get some prompt when i print another object that asks if i want to resume printing or if i want to add the item to the queue. since i never paused printing this is all a bit confusing.

lately i have taken to PAUSING the printers and then restarting them and this sometimes works but mostly it will get hung up again. so right now i have one object in line on one printer and five in line at the other. seems like one page is printing now but it has taken like five minutes to process it...

i am going to power down then unplug and then replug in both printers after leaving them unplugged for five minutes.

i don't update firmware in mac OS at least as far as i understand.

anything i should be doing? i've never run into this problem before and don't really know where to start or how to get good search results.
