I deleted songs off itunes but they came back a...

I wanted to delete a number of songs from iTunes and I haven't done this in a very long time.  I deleted them making sure to remove from library and into trash.  I hooked up my iPhone 5S by USB and selected sync.  For some reason these songs which were deleted from my iTunes library are now back, I presume from the iPhone.  I need them gone from BOTH device and iTunes!

This is extremely frustrating and shows I likely don't know the proper procedure.  I looked at various help documents and I'm not sure of the best approach.

• Do I delete the songs AGAIN from iTunes library, delete ALL music from my iPhone (general/iPhone storage/music), connect and then sync?
• Do I try some method selecting "manually manage music" and deleting with the iPhone connected?

I could really use some help here.
