Can I install 10.8 on a refurbished MacBook Pro...

Hello folks,

I'm new to Macs but am thoroughly experienced in being frustrated by technology and would appreciate any help in making all my computer things do the right things.

So, I just bought a refurbished mid-2012 MacBook Pro running Sierra to do some home music recording. The recording software that goes with my interface requires OS X 10.8.5, so I need to downgrade.

I partitioned the hard drive and bought a copy of Mountain Lion from Apple's website with the intention of being able to dual-boot the computer.  I just downloaded the Mountain Lion installer and went to open it, but apparently...

"This copy of the 'Install OS X' application is too old to be opened on this version of OS X."

So now what?

I can't install an older OS because my current OS is too new? That makes my brain hurt.

Is there some way around this? I don't even need the Sierra partition if that makes it easier.  I just need 10.8.5 working properly on this machine but it won't and I can't.

Please someone rescue me from this most tragic situation.

Sweet, thanks!

Chris

Use DiskMaker X to create an installation thumbdrive from it, and then put it onto the empty partition.
