ThunderBolt Ethernet adaptor

My Thunderbolt adaptor is set to inactive in the network preferences I can only connect to the internet via Wi-Fi.  How do you change the ThunderBolt bridge interface to active?

Click the padlock on the bottom left of the Network Control panel to unlock it (if necessary).

Select the Thunderbolt-Ethernet in the list of interfaces.

Mouse-down on the gear-wheel icon just above the padlock.

Select 'Make Service Active' from the popup menu that appears.

Unfortunately your recommendation did not work, still shows inactive.  the pop up is only giving me inactive status as a selection (pressed several times  to validate that there was no (activate) option.  I checked the status of the Thunderbolt Bridge, both Thunderbolt 1 & 2 show as inactive.
