iMac stuck on grey screen. Help.

I've turned on my iMac (mid-2012) today and it was working completely fine yesterday and the past few weeks. I have update my iMac to High Serra (10.13) only on Tuesday but didn't show any problems straight away but the only thing I can think is causing the issue.

Today I turned it on, made the noise it normally does goes onto the grey apple loading screen, the bar unusually loads up very slowly and then it is stuck on that screen once the bar is completely full, I've waited for it to load and it does nothing. I've tried cmd + R done everything there (apart from erasing as I want to keep all of my work) and tried pressing shift but nothing comes up. I've been trying to fix this since 10am this morning and now it is nearly 15:00 (3pm) and nothing is working.

My wireless keyboard/trackpad are connected and working perfectly fine. This is the first time this has ever happened on my iMac.

Have you tried re-installing the system in Recovery? This should be an install "in place" and should not affect your own data. No erase is required as with Internet Recovery.
