Mail uses words instead of flag icons??

Why does Mail use words instead of flag icons?? It used to use the flag icons, which was quite helpful (being color coded). Now, only words "red" "yellow" "green" etc. are used. Why??? They show up as colored flags on my iPad and iPhone and USED to show up on my computer... but no longer. Weird. Is there a setting I'm missing? Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!
