how do I connect my 2017 MacBook to a 2011 Cinema Display ?

Clarify what you mean by a 2011 Cinema Display?

Do you have an Apple LED Cinema Display or an Apple Thunderbolt Display, both were available in 2011.

If you have the Apple Thunderbolt Display, it is not compatible with the 2017 MacBook because it is not Thunderbolt compliant.

If you have the Apple LED Display, you would need a USB-C to Mini-DisplayPort adapter.
