handoff stopped working

I've noticed that since the latest IOS updates my handoff has stopped working.  Mac and phone both have it enabled and are logged into the same account on iCloud, all settings as per Apple website guides.  Is it a common issue or, could it be something to do with the wifi service being a hotel type and therefore not secure enough?
