How do I redeem my Apple ID balance?

This may seem like a basic thing, but in my iTunes Store acct, it shows I have a 4.32 Apple ID balance.  How do I use that?  I went to purchase a song and of course it asks for my method of payment.  There is not an option for using this balance.

You buy something.  It automatically uses the balance first.

Itunes verifies your account using billing info.

That's how it always worked for me before.  But it wouldn't allow me to purchase anything this time unless I choose a method of payment (credit card or paypal, etc)  I had to just pay for the song - the balance remains what it was before.

Very odd.

Contact itunes support, see what they have to say about it.

Nope.... my balance is still in the accout without any way to use that balance to pay for a new purchase.  iTunes said it will be resolved but that amount is still there. 

Weird.  At least its not a lot more.

Also having this issue.  Entered the code to buy Lion at the App Store.  No download, no way to use the credit. Hope someone gets an answer.

Did anyone get this issue resloved? I have a $27 balance and it keeps trying to charge my credit card. I thought it was only me

You do have your payment method set to none right?

yes. it is sent to none. i am having this same problem.

did you ever figure this out???? I still cant redeem it....what a waste of money

This is the reply cut from apple support email to me:-

To purchase items on the iTunes Store with your store credit, your account information in your user profile needs to be corrected. I'll walk you through this process to get you back up and running in no time.

1) Visit the My Apple ID website at:

https://appleid.apple.com

2) If the site is not displayed in your preferred language, click the Change Language link in the upper-right corner, type the name of your language in the field that appears, then click the Save button.

3) Click the "Manage your account" link.

4) Type your iTunes Store account name (which is your Apple ID) in the Apple ID field, type your password in the password field, then click the Sign In button.

5) Click "Addresses" in the column on the left. If you have multiple shipping addresses, remove any out-of-date or duplicate addresses by clicking Delete. Also, make sure the state or province field is filled out correctly for each address. To edit an address, click Edit. Edit all of your shipping addresses and make sure the appropriate state is selected in the State drop-down menus.

6) Now click "Phone Numbers" on the left. The area codes should be in the area code fields and the phone numbers should be in the phone number fields. If an area code is missing, or if it is in a phone number field, your account information may not save properly.

7) Make any other necessary corrections, then click the Save Changes button.

8) Click sign out in the upper-right corner.

When you make your next purchase on the iTunes Store, you will be asked to review your billing information. At this point, you can change your information or simply click Done at the bottom of the screen to proceed. Once you click Done, you should be able to purchase on the iTunes Store using your store credit.

(I would also point out - change the method of payment icon from your credit card to the "none" icon when you try to buy and are within the Billing infomation screen.  Note: selecting the method of payment icon to "none" didn't work for me originally until I contacted apple support and went through the above procedure. Perhaps re entering your user profile address details resets the system and enables you to buy again from your store credit? )

The solution from Brayton worked for me too, but how can anyone say that ITunes is easy to use, when I have to find a forum to spend the money on my account?  Shocking.
