General Zong Que(宗愨-音同確) lived in the fifth century during the "Southern and Northern Dynasties" Period. Even as a child, he was very skilled at martial arts. He was very brave as well, and had high aspirations.

On the evening before his brother s wedding, a dozen burglars snuck into his home. The burglars expected the home to be empty, and easy to rob. But young Zong Que saw them, and fought heroically. He eventually chased the thieves away.

One of his uncles asked what he was going to do when he grew up.

Young Zong Que answered, "In the future, I will try my best to protect our country and serve our people. When I face difficulties, I will not give up easily. I will face the challenges directly. I d like to ride the wind that blows far and carve through thousands of leagues of waves."

Other guests spoke highly of Zong Que s braveness and lofty aspirations. When Zong Que grew up, he served the army and won great honors in war, and became a nobleman in the Emperor s court. His childhood ideals came true.

The idiom 乘風破浪 comes from Zong Que s story,乘 means to ride, 風 means the wind, 破 means to carve through , 浪means waves. Literally it means to sweep ahead full sail .

This idiom is used to describe someone who advances bravely in defiance of hardship and danger.
