gradient tool turns black

Elements 11 on iMac V 10.12.6  Both up to date.

When moving an image onto a new canvas the colour becomes black & white

In addition, when using the gradient tool the chosen colours become black & white on the double boxes but show the chosen colours on the gradient box on the bottom left of screen.

It's driving me crazy !
