iPad documents and data issue

I've been reading up on this issue and most people claim to have solved it by deleting text messages. My iPad had 16GB of space being held by "documents and data" so I went and deleted ALL text messages on it. After that it is now showing 18.35GB of "documents and data"... So deleting all the text messages seems to have only made the problem worse. Someone please help me with this. I'm at a loss at this point.
