extremely rapidly flashing icons
I have Sierra 10.12.6 on a brand-new iMac 27.
Today I tried to launch MS OneNote for the first time on my new iMac (I've used this in Sierra on my previous iMac without problems).
The icon in the dock went crazy - flashing extremely rapidly, and bouncing equally manically. The computer was totally unresponsive - I couldn't force quit OneNote, nor manually restart or shut down. I had to power down. I tried trashing OneNote and re-installing it - both from my university server and from Time Machine, but the result is the same. I did not receive any system message about the problem (eg the kernel panic message).
My questions:
1 What does the very, very rapid flashing and bouncing signify?
2 What (if anything) can I do should it happen again with other apps?
3 Has anyone else experienced this (either with OneNote or with other apps)?
This may not be an iMac question as such, so I shall also post it in the Sierra forum.
Thanks for any help and insight.
Hi macjack: I have solved the problem by deleting OneNote from Applications and also deleting folders relating to OneNote from my Library\Containers folder, and then reinstalling OneNote. It now works properly.
Thanks for your plist suggestion - it seems that Microsoft puts the related files elsewhere than the Preferences folder!
Hi John, what happens if you startup in Safe Mode?
Thanks,macjack.
I've just tried that, and the problem persists. I can't go any further, as I have no mouse or cursor control or response.
To be more accurate in my description: the OneNote icon doesn't bounce in the Dock - instead it goes somewhat fromside to side, as if in a small arc. The icon in the Applications folder flashes rapidly, as does the frame of the Applications window. If I mouse to the Apple icon window in the Tool Bar, the contentsin the menu flash rapidly, and my cursor won't select OneNote under Force Quit.
Thanks for your comments.
I'd try rebuilding the preferences for that app (I don't use it so I can tell you exactly what they are called but probably com.apple.OneNote.plist) in ~/Library/Preferences. Delete the preference file(s), then try launching the app again.
EDIT: Actually, it's not Apple so the Preferences is probably more like com.Microsoft....
In the Preferences pane, there is no plist for either OneNote or Outlook, both of which are installed in Applications, and both of which work (or worked until today). Outlookis still OK. There are plistsfor Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
The apps are installed via my university Office 365 account - I didn't buy or subscribe to them personally, but via the university where I work - just for your information.
I deleted the crashing version from Applications and reinstalled OneNote directly from my university account, but it made no difference.
Usually, for the symptoms you describe it would be a plist file causing the problem. Either that or an incompatible Login Item, which is why I asked you to check in Safe Mode. I'm afraid I've done all I can to troubleshoot, without having the app itself. I'd try contacting MS Support, or hopefully others will come along with a solution. Good luck!
Thanks, macjack. Your help is appreciated.

You're welcome. I should have thought of Containers, it's another likely place to check.
