Apple watch Mail sync

I have a Series 1 watch with the OS update to watchOS 4.  Since doing the update, when launching mail on the watch, it shows all my messages, but continues to show messages that have since been deleted on my phone or other sources.

I've unpaired and even reset my watch.  Restored from a backup.  Still have the issue.

The initial pairing and launching of Mail on the watch shows the correct messages as on my iphone.  However, as the day goes on and more emails arrive and get deleted or moved on my iPhone or other mail software, those messages still remain as "new" on my Mail application on the watch.

Any ideas?  I'm at a loss.  I sincerely thought a unpairing and reset on the watch would fix it.  I've also restarted my iphone as well thinking that might do something.

Prior to watchOS 4, this had worked perfectly.
