I backed up my Logic Pro 9 files on Dropbox and...

Backed up 4 Logic projects on Dropbox. All the audio files are there, but I cannot open the full project in Logic.

My Macbook was stolen yesterday, and I'm trying to open the files on a new Mac. However, now the files are saved as "LgDoc" and inside there are 3 files: a jpeg "windowimage.jpg," and 2 document files (displayState and documentData). I really don't want to have to piece all the audio files together..I just want to open the project in its entirety on Logic. Can I still do this?

Unfortunately some how you managed to only save a part of the Logic project package....which explains why you cannot load them into a different computer for use with Logic... Lgdoc is the main 'folder' found inside a Logic project (which is a package)

However, you might be able to 'fix' this.... by adding the extension .logic to the end of each of those lgdocs..

So for example..

Rename one of the LgDoc files (after making a backup!) to music1.logic and then try loading it into Logic.. It should work...

Once you have it loaded into Logic.. resave it out again using a different file name....

Thank you so much! This worked!

Great!!

Thanks for letting us know how it worked out..

Cheers..

Btw,. the next time you wish to save Logic Projects to Dropbox.. zip/compress them first.. Then you won't get this issue... It seems using Dropbox directly with Logic files.. is the cause of this problem as i just tried it myself and had the same results.. Zipping up the projects and then uploading to Dropbox worked fine...

Please HELP ME the art of sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i just did a reinstall of os 10.6.6 snow leopard, i have passport external hardrive and i thought that i could just drag over music projects straight from the logic folder to my external hardrive.. now im getting the same exact problem as the person above the lgdoc and the 3 different files

will i be ok????? unfortunately i cant try to fix it yet because i lost my logic pro 9 serial number thing so i might have to call on that, but im actually really really worried that i might not be able to restore all of my projects ,about 60 or so in total.... that i have put years into...... most of my projects use mainly sounds from logic and some have audio ...... will i be able to recover these files.... should i follow the same steps as the person you helped above?????

Yes.. It shoud work for you too...

This method/fix has worked for a couple more people who have done the same thing (Used dropbox without zipping up the projects first) so I am confident you will be okay.

Cheers..

And please don't assume Dropbox is a backup. If the thief would delete the files, your backup would be gone. Use an actual backup in the future.

I want to say thank you for responding so fast to me. I was super worried last night , but strangely once I installed logic back on my comp all the files instantly reverted back to the normal music project form....... I'm so happy but thanks a million Nigel ... I Really appreciate your response ^.^

Persue,

First of all.. you are most welcome... and glad to know it all worked out for you.. Thanks for leting us know too..

Much appreciated...

I will add my +1 to Blueberry's comments however... Dropbox, while very useful, does not make for a secure backup system... and so I personally use SuperDuper! to make regular clones of my system drives and TimeMachine for hour to hour/day to day backups.. as I have found the two methods used together, provide me with the best overall backup security...

Cheers..

Nigel,

When you say change the LgDoc file to something like music1.logic, do you mean change the folder, or the three files within the folder? For example, I changed a LgDoc folder with the 3 files in it to mysong.logic, however, the file obviously remains a folder, so when I click on it, the three files continue to show up. Should I change the three files within the folder to .logic(s) as well?

Am I making sense? I think I'm clearly missing something.

No, the LgDoc file is - as stated - only a part of a Logic song. You can't make it a Logic song by renaming it.

I thought Nigel outlined that by renaming the LgDoc file to something.logic, you could open it in logic. What I'm assuming he means by the LgDoc File is the Folder that containes the DisplayState, DocumentData and a windowsimage.jpg. Are you saying that renaming the folder will not work now?

zelda,

To clarify..

Make a new folder...and give it a name such as for example, testproject

Put a copy of the LgDoc Folder inside the folder you just made.

Now rename the new folder you made to, in this example, testproject.logic

It should now work in Logic...

And as i said earlier.. next time you want to save a logic project to dropbox, zip it up first..... before sending it to Dropbox and that stops this weird behaviour happening.

Hi Blueberry,

Looking back at my original notes in this thread.. i have no idea how the OP got it to work as i explained it all wrong!

However the method above, in my last post..  does seem to work..
