I have an early 2008 iMac and want to add a monitor.  The display port is NOT a mini display port and is not a Thunderbolt port.  What is it?

It is a Mini DVI port.

For a DVI monitor, you need a > https://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B/apple-mini-dvi-to-dvi-adapter

For a VGA monitor, you need a > https://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A/apple-mini-dvi-to-vga-adapter

You can also find these older Mini DVI adapters at some Apple Authorized Retailers like Fry's or Best Buy and on line at Amazon.

Thank you very much.  I ordered one at my local Best Buy.  This is an obscure port; even my owner's manual said my iMac has mini display port so the manual must have been written some time after my Mac was built.

You are welcome!

All of the iMac models from Early 2006 thru Early 2008, had Mini DVI ports for video output.

All of the iMac models from Late 2008 thru Late 2011, had MiniDisplay ports for video output.

All of the iMac models from 2012 and later, have Thunderbolt ports that serves as both high resolution display output and/or high performance data transfer.

Hello,

I came across this conversation and am looking for help. I have an early 2008 iMac and a 2017 MacBook Pro. Are there any mini DVI to USB C cables? I assume not. Do you know what's the best way to connect the iMac with my USB C device to use as a 2nd monitor? I have an adaptor for my MacBook Pro that has female HDMI, female USB, and female ethernet.

Thanks!
